Organizational Overview - The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA)

SHEA's mission is to promote the prevention of healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistance and to advance the fields of healthcare epidemiology and antibiotic stewardship.

Position Description

Under the supervision of the Director, Communications, Membership and Operations, this position manages and is accountable for all SHEA marketing and membership initiatives, including but not limited to SHEA’s newsletter, marketing and promotion initiatives and membership services. The Manager works to ensure consistent, high quality and valued member services and to ensure effective marketing of SHEA conferences and content to members and external audiences both in print and online.

Essential Responsibilities


  • Develop marketing materials consistent with branding that represent SHEA (e.g., on promotional material, publications)
  • Manage vendor contracts for marketing and printing-related services
  • Responsible for design and production of promotional materials associated with SHEA meetings and educational programs
  • Responsible for design and content of member recruitment and retention materials
  • Develop and distribute dedicated email messages regarding projects and programs as appropriate and on a pre-established schedule working with internal stakeholders
  • Utilize social media as a regular platform for communicating SHEA messaging
  • Monitor and edit the SHEA website, ensuring priority items are featured, older information is updated or removed and working weblinks
  • Manage the SHEA exhibit booth at meetings and other external meetings


  • Review, evaluate and analyze membership trends, needs and participation to track and grow recruitment, retention and involvement
  • Develop short and long-term member retention plans and strategies to expand and engage members
  • Develop and manage a process for regularly identifying member and potential member needs
  • Create a member value proposition
  • Assess and recommend member benefits to ensure continued/enhanced value to members
  • Serve as staff liaison to Awards Committee, including Fellows Designation Process and work with Membership Task Force
  • Oversee content and delivery of monthly member newsletter
  • Oversee Fellows designation process
  • Oversee and develop content for and engaging volunteers on MySHEA, our private online social engagement platform
  • Follow up with lapsed, dropped and unaffiliated members via surveys and/or phone calls
  • Develop and maintain expert level familiarity with the membership database

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in member services and marketing preferably at a membership organization
  • Bachelor’s degree desired

Required Skills

  • Team player who is eager to work in a small office environment
  • Strong logistical and planning skills, with the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Detail-oriented and able to meet and manage multiple deadlines
  • Self-starter who is willing to tackle new challenges
  • Proficient with Excel and related Microsoft Office products
  • Excellent writing and oral communication and customer service skills
  • Proven ability to manage vendors and other contract relationships
  • Experience with association management databases – Salesforce preferred
  • Experience leveraging social media platforms in a business setting – LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Knowledge of digital communication and marketing automation
  • Works independently with minimal supervision
