Organizational and Position Overview

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (, a national medical association representing more than 10,000 physicians/scientists with a highly-respected voice in infectious diseases policy and advocacy, clinical and scientific affairs is seeking exceptional candidates for our Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Membership opening. 

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will set the strategic direction for the Society’s integrated marketing, communications and membership strategies, strengthen the Society’s brand and monitor brand loyalty across the field of infectious diseases, oversee strategy development for membership retention and recruitment and serve as strategic counselor to the management team.

Year One Success Factors Include:

  • Development of an integrated marketing and communications plan that supports the Society’s six strategic priorities
  • Implementation of Communications Audit Recommendations – including successful website launch at IDWeek 2018
  • Implementation of key recommendations from the Journals Strategic Planning Retreat

Essential Functions

  • Distill and communicate our unique value proposition to a variety of key audiences
  • Create and execute an integrated marketing and communications plan for members using existing and new communication channels
  • Provide strategic communications guidance and support to the CEO and colleagues throughout the organization to ensure that IDSA’s messages reach intended audiences and that communications initiatives are aligned with the Society’s strategic priorities
  • Develop, implement and assess media/public relations activities with national and international media outlets reaching trade and lay audiences to raise the brand awareness of the field of ID and the Society    
  • Ensure effective response management during major crises/outbreaks, including members’ access to up-to-date, credible guidance from national and international public health authorities; and ensure that IDSA’s science-based messages are effectively communicated to the public, policymakers, and other key audiences
  • Develop, implement and evaluate marketing strategies to increase attendance and revenue at IDWeek
  • Provide strategic leadership for the Society’s three Journals by partnering with the Editors and Publisher
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Publications Committee and Rapid Communications Task Force
  • Ensure that retention and recruitment activities align with the needs of current and future members; continually enhance the value of membership; oversee the development and execution of appropriate membership engagement strategies
  • Inspire and motivate your team
  • Hire, train and mentor assigned staff

Education and Experience Required

  • College degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years relevant job experience in communications and public relations, ideally including experience in a non-profit association

 Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Solid understanding of traditional and emerging communications and marketing strategies
  • Excellent and proven leadership skills including strategic and systematic thinking
  • Excellent oral and writing skills
  • Ability to convey complex or controversial scientific and medical issues in ways that are compelling and understandable to a lay audience
  • Knowledge of and experience with progressive public relations tactics and communications technologies
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Flexibility and ability to work on several projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal, people management and teamwork skills
  • General knowledge of infectious diseases
  • High level of professional conduct; commitment to aligning and proactively supporting fellow members of the management team

Physical Requirements

  • Environment consistent with that of a typical office setting
  • Long periods of sitting or standing
  • Frequent repetitive movements such as typing or writing
  • Some travel required
