Organizational and Position Overview

Nested within the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) is a professional home for clinicians and researchers working on the front lines of the HIV epidemic.  You will represent HIVMA as a Senior/Policy and Advocacy Manager (position could be "senior" level depending on experience) who will lead HIVMA’s policy and advocacy efforts on priority issue areas, including appropriations, the Ending HIV as an Epidemic initiative, research, evidence-based prevention, other relevant public health and physician workforce issues.

Reports to - HIVMA Executive Director

Essential Responsibilities

  • Monitor and develop responses to relevant legislation, regulations and other federal notices, e.g., testimony, comments, statements and other correspondence
  • Cultivate relationships with relevant Congressional staff and members, and the executive branch to advance HIVMA’s policy priorities
  • Represent HIVMA and actively participate in HIV and broader health care coalitions and workgroups, deliver public comments at related forums, and present at conferences as necessary
  • Develop issue briefs and other resources to educate policymakers and HIVMA members on HIVMA’s policy priorities      
  • Lead HIVMA’s member grassroots advocacy
  • Organize annual Board member HIVMA Advocacy Day and other member advocacy opportunities
  • Staff IDSA and HIVMA workgroups as needed
  • Support HIVMA’s social media strategy
  • Lead or support other policy and advocacy projects as needed

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five or more years of experience in the health care policy arena with developed advocacy, policy analysis and research skills
  • Experience working on Capitol Hill or interacting with Congress, Executive Branch agencies
  • Knowledge and experience with the federal legislative process
  • Experience using social media experience for advocacy

Required Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills / strong interpersonal skills are a must
  • Strong initiative, willingness and flexibility to take on new policy issues as they arise and the ability to manage projects independently while working as a part of a team    
  • Familiarity with HIV-related policy issues
  • Strong problem-solver with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
